100 Burial - Street Halo (Produced by Burial)

Other than the epic collaborative track that he shared this year with Thom Yorke & Four Tet, Burial has been as unseen (as usual) and quiet as ever. "Street Halo" I believe was his way of saying he's still here. But I also hope that it means that he's stay here. The muffled bass melody over the cloudy synths and vocal samples fit well with grooving beat. It knocks with serious knock. Its something to play after the party when you just aren't finished partying yet. Hope to see more of Burial. James Blake didn't officially kill Dubstep. Yet.

099 YC - Racks (featuring Future) (Produced by Sonny Digital)

Now if you know us, we love a fair bit of coonery once in a while. Especially when done with an irreplaceable charisma. Does YC have that? No, not really. But does he have an undeniable record? Yes. This record is catchy and is instrumental on solidifying a new term for lots of money in the "urban world". A "rack" is equal to $1000 if you're asking. A lot of you hate this song because it doesn't represent the "real" or whatever. But if you are an unknown jig from Ohio that mustered up the guts to record a catchy ass song and have the whole hip-hop industry jump on and make remixes, then you are doing something correct. Besides getting mentioned on Watch The Throne is a big deal too. Besides, like it or not, Future is about to be the new king of hip-hop soon.

098 Wiz Khalifa - The Race (Produced by I.D. Labs)

Now Rolling Papers turned out to be everything we expected it to be: A commercial sounding hip-hop album. And why shouldn't it? He is signed to a major label and the nigga has to move units. And that he did. But "The Race" was one of the few tunes on the album that gave us that Young Khalifa that made us fans in the first place.

097 Kreayshawn - Gucci Gucci (Produced by DJ Two Stacks & Adeptus)

We fell in love with her faster than Mississauga hotties and when she signed that $1 million deal with Sony, we hated. It was too quick. She has one record and the labels came running. This record. I predict that NO ALBUM will come out on Sony and if I am right, which I usually am, this song will be the reference as to why you should hold out on the Big 4 after you put out a hot song. Sony already made their profits with this record. I don't do know if they would risk financing another one seeing how bad the industry is doing.

096 Young Jeezy - I Do (feat. Jay-Z & Andre 3000) (Produced by M16)

Now Bluu first played me the original version of this record back in Fall 2010 but it only had Andre 3000 on it at the time. It sounded good but somewhat incomplete. When the record resurfaced on Jeezy's TM103 LP AND had Jay-Z on it along with the 3 Stacks verse? Pffft. Nigga fell in love fast. It sounds a lot more current and relevant now. Plus, Jeezy sounds better on the hook than Andre's. Sorry.

Very sultry and seductive shit here. Niggas lost their fucking minds when I told them this was Odd Future. They thought them old nigga Soulaquarians came back or something. Naaah kid. Fuck that. Anywho, Syd The Kid's whispery vocals over the jazzy instrumental trying to reconcile a lost love is very arousing I must say. I got a lot of boners bumping this record.

This piece sounds like a Spaghetti Western. Like totally. The title of the record actually comes to life. I play this and see a Catholic priest at a crap table. Real spit. He ain't drinking or touching girls butts but the nigga sure is raking in a lot of dough. And this song is playing.

This record is large. Real large. The street groove bass over that kick/snare/perc. loop?? Damn. And its progressive too. So it kinda feels like the sun is just about to peak out at you and start your day off real lovely. Definitely a morning jam of mine. I wonder if this song was dedicated to their son. Beautiful.

This song is the reason why Chris Brown's "Look At Me Now" is not on the list. Diplo totally ripped off song. I'm not the only person to notice this. "Loud Pockets" is a great record. Its probably one of the most swagged out hip-hop tunes ever made. Young L is a beast as a producer. He uses a lot of different sonics and textures kinda creating a "post-Hyphy" sound. Its really addictive. I can easily say I'm a fan of his beats over his lyrical capabilities but his raspy baritone over this beat is like Pepperpot with hardo bread.

Gal dem ah say Gaza party bad."), the over abundance of women ("Gal dash way like crab outta bag"), the appreciation of your chosen outfit by yourself & others ("Look how mi pants dem straight so. Dem love how me Clarks dem lace so…"). He also speaks on something that we as Screwfacers don't do. Chill with a bag of dudes at the party ("Me nuh wan si no man ah par wid forty man…"). Go at least 5 niggas. 15 the most. Unless you follow what Chi Ching Ching feels the necessary amount should be.

Remember when we were younger and we listened to Wu-Tang, and they used to always tell us that what they were saying was for the children, and that used to trip us out because, well, the subject matter wasn't shit that we really really needed to know. I mean, we were just interested in hearing those beats or hearing something quite foul. Then we got older and understood everything. The whole vision and shit. I didn't understand "Wu-Revolution" until i was like 24. The point im trying to make is that through learning and growing and understanding, i've developed a HIGH appreciation for Shing Shing Regime. They definitely do not try to take up where the Wu left off or be like them but the comparison lays solely in the offering of their gifts. You see they have what it takes to be felt on a large scale. Niggas like me who learned to appreciate other genres much more than hip-hop can champion this song due to their ability to make you feel something.

Its a simple acoustic guitar played over Thom's looped vocals ("Don't hurt me…..don't hurt me.") and it did make a nigga choke up when I heard it first. Its a beautiful song. Please play this on a rainy day.

It should be on CHFI, Virgin Radio, all them sappy ass stations. Its just damn good. You play it and you just bounce. You do something. You can't play like a weak beat when this comes on. If you already know this song, I know for a fact you danced your ass off to it like someone wasn't watching. I fucking did and still do. Shit. Play this at your next party or family function.

I don't know how this flew over a lot of people's heads. I find it soulful as fuck. The acoustic chords substitute into an electric guitar riff with a 1,2 kick snare over a bass groove. She gets dirty and playful as she needs to be. And i'm digging it. You know I'm like the black Jerry Sags anyways.

When I first played this, i kicked over a stack of books, tossed clean laundry, pelted stationary and stomped anything breakable under my Timberlands. This is the surprise banger of 2011. That snare roll and that double time kick drum. The guitars are absolute chaos. The lyrics are a page out of The Nihilist Handbook, if there ever was one. If you love punk rock as much I enjoy it, this is for you. John Lydon must be happy with this.

There is not one intelligible lyric on this epochal collaboration between these two brilliant musicians. "Fall Creek Boys Choir" has Bon Iver on the vocals and James Blake on production duties. Bon Iver croons unintelligible lyrics over James' ill production. The melody is a ghost like piano over this thunderous kick and a stadium reverbed snare mixed with a distorted organ that sounds a little filtered. I dont know. It sounds like bliss to me.

I can never play this song without playing it more than twice. Its still a hot song right now. Like??? Hip-hop songs these days usually burn out fast but this is some shit my kids will have to know. I think this is "Stadium hip-hop". Meek Mill's opening verse cuts deep into your sick upon first listen. I was fucking glued when I heard it first and said, "Wow!" Its the best introductory shit you could ever spit. "I be riding though my old hood but I'm in my new whip. Same old attitude but I'm on that new shit. They say they gon' rob, see me never do shit...." Ouch! Ross of course eats the track like a hungry hippo signature grunt and all. This song probably still holds hella weight in the club. I mean, when they played it at Time on Caribana Sunday i made sure to jump on that couch and at as coonish as I possibly could.

This song was the surprise jam tune of the year. This song really gets us going. The scattered scat harmonies and that accompanying bass is absolute badness. The vocal arrangement is out of this fucking world. This song is sheer "I don't give a fuck what you think" genius. I've danced around butt ass naked to this song fresh out the shower many times. Oddly enough, I enjoy it the best that way.

022 Soulja Boy - Zan With That Lean

Throughout 2011, especially this Spring/summer, Soulja Boy released a string of mixtures. Just one after the other and I couldn't help but check them all out. The irony, is that my least favourite of them all had the gem. "Zan With That Lean" is a perfect record. With this record Soulja Boy finds his niche. And his niche is to make gooned out baller nigga pop music. Yes. Nothing but that. He fits the profile and he's already seen the fortune you can amass not being lyrical. Why not stick with this style? This song is amazing. I don't care if you don't like hip-hop. This is a song that you will sing after one listen. It hits you immediately. The whole song is catchy. From Kwony Cash's melodic hook to Soulja's enthusiastic ad-libs. Juice!!!

This song is absolute epiphany yo. Its so amazing. Its arranged to perfection. The production really brings out the hype in the live parts and the cool in the calm parts. Why didn't Drake choose this? No worries. Magaman Sound sure did.

The first time we heard this it was me, Bluu & Riggs together at Soundbank Studios. And it came on during one of Bluu's smoke breaks during our session and as he was about to hit the door he stopped right in his tracks. The melody had him bobbing crazy and he had this "I smell as poops" look on his face. Word yo. He just stood there for the whole record fiercely dissecting the piano overdubs that sync melodically. We weren't even paying attention to the songwriting. That melody and the accompanying bass? Shit man. Then when you actually take in the songwriting……man, there's at least 3 different women I can dedicate this song to. Not you three though. And especially not you three from down so.

The upbeat pop feel to this may really alter your awareness to the subject matter on the record. People can be really almshouse. Trust me, I know. I'm one of those people at times. What she's getting at indirectly could be another thing entirely. Or maybe I'm just over analyzing. The guitar riff on the chorus is my favourite of the year. Its an instant foot tapper.

The organ riff starts. The guitars come in. The hi-hats ring in the background. The bass guitar swings though. And then when the kick drums come in turning the dreamy melody into a bouncy rhythm track and I'm lost. And don't wanna be found. Probably my favourite summer song hands down of 2011.

This record changed alot of things in the music world. It made us take notice of not just Tyler and his talents (If you didn't peep Bastard by then of course) and to the Golf Wang movement. We were aware but didn't focus until this dropped and we saw him jump on Jimmy Kimmel's back. This really helped open the door for people to just try a ting and be themselves. Give it a go. I'd be lying if I said that OFWGKTA didn't inspire us.

013 Panda Bear - Last Night At The Jetty (Produced by Noah Lennox)

Noah Lennox to me is like a musical God. Just the shit he does and tries, to me, always works. He said he wasn't fucking with the samplers for this record and made the shit work. This song is the prime example of that. Solely a rhythm a track. You put it on and just glide with it. Vocally and musically. Every four measures I can swear to you that you get pulled in closer to it. This song has the Jedi force ferrrrsheerrrrrr. It was beautifully done man. The water drop guitar riffs and that bass accompanying it. Shit. Panda's harmonized vocals are always soul soothing. Him just talking about a relationship that went sour never sounded so fucking good. I play this song on Sunday's religiously. Take that, bible wielders!! Fred Hammond ain't got shit on this.

Anthony Gonzalez is not just a big inspiration to me and my sound and what I do musically but he's sort of an accidental genius. I don't think he cares about the accolades too much (I do) but he cares about the music. And you can hear it in this song. I found it to be more blatant and fuller than the earlier M83 works. "Midnight City" is a dope fucking synth groove that has to pack dancefloors around the world. I wish Time would play this song. I'd soooo bubble down a lace fronted cutie to this. SO hard.

This was the grandiose shit we wanted on first listen to Watch The Throne. We thought ALL the songs should be like that before we didn't grasp the album. "Niggas In Paris" is an pinnacle of all the baller nigga rap songs ever made. These guys were name dropping spots and things my east end ass has never experienced ever in life just yet. To tell the truth, after hearing this I actually started looking at Paris as a "must go" and looked into getting a room at the Le Meurice! For 6 days!!! Real talks. We will make it happen though. And when I get off that plane at Charles De Gaulle guess what song I'm gonna be playing on my boombox. Yeeeeaaahh nigga.

010 St. Vincent - Strange Mercy (Produced by Annie Clark & John Congleton)

Annie Clark should have been nominated for a Grammy for Record Of The Year with this song. This record had a nigga open wide. The theme is a mother talking to her son on a jail visit. I know what a lot of female artists or songwriters are saying right now. Why didn't I think of that? This gripping tune had me on the verge of tears. Especially the "If I ever meet that dirty policeman who roughed you up" part. You kinda adopt a mother's sense of protection for their children. I don't have any kids but that part really put me in the shoes of a parent.

009 Cults - Go Outside (Produced by Cults)

I get the similar feeling a prude Baptist gets when they are in church hearing the "word" or a great gospel song. There is nothing religious about the song. There's no Jesus references or ode to touching little boys but the elements within are similar to that of a gospel choir. Great organ. Nice bass melody. Madellin Follin's multi tracked reverbed vocals is probably the closest thing to heaven a nigga like me will ever fucking experience. Its not like on the scale of Minnie Ripperton or Alaine Haughton but just a great attention grabber. Just listen to how she belts out that hook. Owwww!

008 Fleet Foxes - Grown Ocean (Produced by Phil Elk & Fleet Foxes)

This is probably my favourite produced record of the year. Easily one of the years best. Its a breathtaking folk masterpiece. Yes. I will say that. It has to be. I mean, if it has my Screwfaced ass singing this song out loud no matter where I am when it comes on, then its gotta be more than just a good song. I love it. The guitar arrangements, the harmonies, the reverbed drums. When I got the album, I listened to this song over and over and over and over again, still. I didn't even bother to take in "Montezuma" or "Battery Kinzie" which are absolutely brilliant pieces but didn't speak to me like this song did at all. Its all about finding what matters. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. If you know what you're looking for, you'll know when you found it.

Best hook of the year. Hands down. Nothing was better or catchier. I played this song around my "hardened" friends and they even ended up singing the hook. And how could you not? The song is perfect. Even though the theme is some straight "I want you back" shit, through relation it kinda helps the jam. Why this song didn't blow up? I don't know. I thought tweens and teens all over the world would be killing this song. It makes no fucking sense!!! They have the look and everything. This was the diamond in the rough of 2011. I don't care if you aren't into garage rock, you just play this. Clear Channel really needs to fuck off with the payola.

006 Danny Brown - 30 (Produced Skywlkr)

Reaching your 3rd decade should be monumental. Should. But not always. Especially when your 20s were hell. This record for me was like a coming again of age and finding redemption. When he goes "For the last 10 years I've been so fucking stressed!!", I immediately felt him. Its like you spend your twenties either going after what it is you want or you spend it trying to please others. We sadly choose the latter. Whether its friends, family, yuppies, whatever. You barely know who you are in your twenties. If you have a huge want for something you may end up suffering for it. I sure did. All before I turned twenty I experienced alot that people haven't. I think those experiences kinda ruined me. I spent alot of my twenties trying to get back to that prominence I thought I once possessed. But I didn't possess shit. It was a hard pill to swallow but I did it. And I really haven't felt better. I'm way more confident and 200% more talented then I ever was. Good things will come to you if you believe it. I know Danny feels the same way. All the years of bullshit he had to go through is now starting to lighten up. He's got soo far to go. Even though he's 30, he doesn't think or act like an old nigga. We'd be great friends.

Its so lovely to hear when a woman is so hung up on her man. Loving his ass off. All under him. I know alot of women these days find that gross but thats because they are single and bitter. Nobody told you to fuck that broke nigga with swag. Nobody told you to fuck that corny rich nigga. You did. But when you find that awesome nigga. The one different from the rest and appreciates you for being you, then you may find yourself in the kitchen with heels on. You might find yourself stripping for him. You may find yourself giving him blow jobs for breakfast. There's nothing wrong with that. Beyonce exemplifies everything I discussed in this song. When she belts "If you leave me you're out of you're mind!" not only is she right but you find yourself agreeing with her too. What man wouldn't want a woman like that? Yeah yeah, we all want Beyonce but what I mean is a woman with the same characteristics. A lady in the street and a freak in the sheets may be cliche when it comes to desires but it is really and truly what we as men all want. Along with ego boosting and attention giving. But men, you've gotta give her that too. Trust me on this. Great fucking record. Ladies, you now have a blueprint on how to keep your man. Lock'it!!!

The best hip-hop posse cut in a long while. Finally a posse cut that the youth have. I mean, yeah "I'm So Hood" and "Welcome To My Hood" are bangers but this song brought an immediate presence. It was undeniable y'kno. You'd expect nothing less from the top rappers in the game right now. It was bold. It was boastful. It was braggadocio on overdrive. But that's hip-hop to me. To present something and say, "Get with it!". We sure fucking did. How could we not? We heard that screaching synth melody over the filtered drums and that was it. Lots of things in this song that old niggas never told us when we were young like "Get it while you're here, boy". We was always told that "patience is a virtue" nonsense. This song is a representation and an anthem for the hip-hop generation of now. Get everything you can and live your life to the fucking fullest. Even if we die tomorrow. Besides, who wants to live til 80 anyways???

This is THE record. The eye opener, y'kno. It opened me up to something that I totally ignored, man. Subliminally, due to my nature, I told my mind to hate on this shit which is why I turned the album off before I even got to this record. Shout out to Ziplock for putting me on. Turned me into a huge fan. What more do i really need to say? WE ALL KILLED THIS SONG!

001 James Blake - The Wilhelm Scream (Produced by James Blake)

The first song to bring tears to my eyes in 2011. Its a masterpiece. And for those of you thinking that the record is too hollow and minimal to be even considered a masterpiece let me explain something to you swine. The record is actually a cover version of one of his father's songs. James took the line, which was similar to my life at the moment and made it something more than just words. The imagery that accompanies it is quite haunting and depressing but it was my life and I'm not ashamed of it. It kinda helped me cope too. Realize my belonging. Helped me get over alot. Helped me even forget the bullshit that made me insecure too. Its not just the words its the production. This to me is the finest production you we're served with in 2011. Such a minimal song with such grandiose results is not easy to come by or even compose. Here's a guy who took a downbeat song and closes it by using dubstep....as an instrument. Its through that ingenuity that makes me say that he killed Dubstep. In a good way of course. I mean, Dubstep is hitting that mark that Grime did before it died. I'm just glad it was done by one of their own and not some yuppie record label. Those cob niggas kill everything.

050 Feist - Metals

We're huge fans of Leslie Feist. Something about that damn voice. Can't put a finger on it. Metals to me seems much more stripped down. Not just sonically but also in spirit as well.
The concepts are a lot more darker and placid. I think with the concepts as morbid as they sound make her vocals all the more bone chilling. Example you say? Cop a squat, nigga. When she croons "Ohhhhh bring 'em all back to the life…" on 'Graveyard' I get the shakes. Like I tremble for real. The point im trying to make is with this album I doubt she was going for the feeling she left us with after The Reminder. She was trying to get a little bit edgy. And it worked. But we prefer happy Feist.

049 Peaking Lights - 936

This album is what you play when you're cleaning the house or doing something clerical but distracts you. You can't really jam it i a large social setting because it becomes just background music to all the camaraderie. This shit ain't no background music. It speaks high volumes to Electronics music listeners and composers. Its great inspirational piece to me. Reminds me that there is no limits to when you mix imagination and sound. It got me going.

048 Terius Nash - 1977

This "free album" kinda picks up where The Dream left off on Love King. Of course, there's sex. Yes, there's betrayal. And yes, there is that Post-R&B production that we love. But I tend to feel he used this offering to let us in to his personal life. Its like he was opening up his divorce and the problems present that caused it all to come into fruition. Truth or not, this was a strong effort and I'm waiting for that album. This man is super talented and you're a fool if you don't see it yet.

047 DJ Quik - The Book Of David

Age is nothing but a number. DJ Quik is 41 and sounding as fresh as these younger dudes. Still a beast behind them boards and the flyest "behind a Norman microphone".

046 EMA - Past Life Martyred Saints

Erika M. Anderson has been through some shit. You can feel the pain and vulnerability in the songwriting for sure. The accompanying production fits like gloves too. Either grandiose ("The Grey Ship", "California") or minimal ("Anteroom", "Marked"), you still feel the music speaking to you. This album woulda really talked to me when I was 21. Drug abuse & bad relationships was all I knew.

045 Action Bronson - Dr. Lecter

Fuck all the Ghostface Killah comparisons, this caucasian from Flushing can sppppiiiiittttttttt. Holy fuck. I don't even know how I discovered this guy. Nobody recommended him. Nobody told me to check him out. I didn't even see any reviews on this. Not to say there wasn't any, I just didn't see them. But all in all, I'm happy I jumped on this. You know how long I've been waiting to hear a white rapper rap about Jerk Chicken????

043 Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost

This album sounds too damn polished. Way too damn polished. Very perfect sounding. I kinda miss that dirty grundgy sound they came with on Album when Christopher Owens had that wiry whiny voice. Its like you can hear his frustration and read his temperament. Now his vocals are all perfected like he too vocal classes. But you must respect artists and their progression. Musically, as a band, they are better than ever. They did just that on this record. Sounding like a cohesive unit. There has to be improvisations on the album but producers kind of made that undetectable. We enjoyed it but sometimes putting that "gloss" on your shit isn't always going to work for everyone. It did for #33 though. (Just wait nuh man?)

042 Jhene Aiko - Sailing Souls

She's like a new age Yummy Bingham. And I LOVE me some Yummy Bingham. But Jhene damn sure gave the me boners this summer. Her pillow vocals breeze in and out these records like a chinook. Even though a mixtape, her potential is bright for all to see. Those dummies at Def Jam were smart enough to take notice.

Hip-hop purists had to have flipped their wigs when they discovered this. I know they saw 1991 on it and expected some Mark The 45 King shit. Nahhhh nigga. This mixtape is so fucking insane and ridiculous that its genius. Its obvious that Spaceghostpurrp is a fan of 90s hip-hop. But not the 90s hip-hop the "old niggas" champion. I'm talking like 3-6 Mafia, DJ Screw type shit, 2 Live Crew shit. Niggas that were bringing innovation to hip-hop developing it into multi-faceted genre that it is. All that violent, misogynistic shit that attracted me as a youth to hip-hop is all over this shit. The mixtape has a real underground feel to it. The basement sounding beats, the lo-fi mixes. The evil laugh sample throughout the tape reminds me of DJ Clue? tapes as a teen. Spaceghostpurrp kicks absolutely nothing conscious or memorable on this. And what for? It would sound stupid on this if he did. Instead, he gave us jams like "Grind On Me", "Get Yah Head Bust" and my personal favourite "Suck A Dick For 2011". He doesn't hold back or try to follow. You can feel the authenticity all over this shit. I still play this tape and will continue to in the future.
P.S. - If you're reading this Spaceghost, could you please do another mix of "Take That Dick" so I can bump it this summer???

A great primal recording. No crazy effects or "overproducing" here. Just a solid record talking about strained relationships. The subtlety on this brings her out more so you can feel her stand out. For example, "Unrequited Love". I ain't even going to explain it. Just put that shit on and tell me you ain't feeling it.

038 Danger Mouse & Daniel Luppi present Rome

5 years in the making, yo. Shit. Sometimes you really gotta dive knee deep in the art to capture that feeling you know is necessary. It happened on this. Enlisting Jack Black & Norah Jones as vocalists for select tracks was perfect. You didn't need singers whose voices would manipulate or take away from the music. The point of the album was to create a modernized Spaghetti Western Pop Opera. I think it worked.

037 Radiohead - The King Of Limbs

They dropped this shit out of nowhere. There was no announcement really. It just dropped and took up a good piece of my spring. Its not a big departure from the last album at all but just wasn't as "full" as it. There was still great records on this shit. "Codex" still gives me shivers when I play it.

036 WU LYF - Go Tell Fire To The Mountain

This band is not a Wu-Tang affiliate. WU LYF (World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation) is a band from Manchester, England. The same place as two of my favourite bands, Joy Division & The Stone Roses. Similar to me, they want nothing to do with the press and turned down offers from record labels to release the music themselves. I didn't learn all this until after I fell in love with the music. It just hits. They describe their sound as "heavy pop", which has alot of Post-rock, Post-punk inspirations. Organ riffs, plucked guitar chord melodies, bass guitar grooves and reverbed drums bring this sound to great heights. And we can't forget Ellery James Roberts' vocals. So grundgy and out of tune. Its really punk. Fucking love it. You know how many drunken nights I've spent jumping around the house to "L Y F" and "Spitting Blood"? Countless. Of all the new bands this year these guys were my favourite. I think they did more than make me get hype and countless others. I believe deep down that if this album didn't come out The Stone Roses would not have reunited.

035 Shing Shing Regime - I Am Shing Mixtape

Yes. You read right that says mixtape. This mixtape was so fitting. It encompasses everything that should be possessed in a hip-hop mixtape sprinkled with knowledge all throughout. And even though they drop gems for your mind to take it, it doesn't come off preachy. It just feels right. Not alot of rap acts have that power, y'know. Wu-Tang possessed it heavy. Shit. I wonder if Raekwon tried to add them to his IceH20 Records outfit. If you haven't heard this shit, I suggest you grab it and bang your fucking head. Definitely one of the best I've heard this year.

034 AraabMuzik - Electronic Dream

He really hit niggas from another side with this. We figured that he'd put out an album full of post-Dipset beats to rock out to. But instead he gave us an album mixing hip-hop with dance music samples. It sounds nothing too special as I tell it to you but there was a formula that just hit the spot on this shit. It was quite addictive still. I hope he does another one like this but hits us with another style or something. Instrumental albums sometimes speak better than those with vocals on them.

033 Smith Westerns - Dye It Blonde

They sound way better polished. Way better with the "gloss" on their records. I wouldn't be surprised if the record inspired a big Glam surge in the near future. Seriously.

032 Cut Copy - Zonoscope

This shit was cohesive as FUCK.

031 Panda Bear - Tomboy

When Panda Bear announced that he would be releasing a new album he said that he was going to step away from using the machines and gadgets and make a more rhythm based album. I was cool with it. I'm a real "if it ain't broke why fix it" type of guy but I trusted he would bring the heat. Then when he announced that Sonic Boom will be mixing the record, I was fucking sold. Immediately. It kinda had to grow on me a bit but when it did, it hit right. The assurance he makes you feel on "You Can Count On Me", the happiness you feel on "Last Night At The Jetty", how at peace you feel when "Scheherezade" comes on and the trippy feeling you get on "Friendship Bracelet". I couldn't have asked for this to be done any other way.

030 Destroyer - Kaputt

Aight. Early 80's babies. Do you remember when you used to go out with your parents and they'd turn on the radio and put it on the most god awful station with those 80's pop tunes that were kinda light in sound but heavy in presence? You hated every minute of that shit but you caught yourself singing the songs when alone or focusing on something and then as you got older you realized, "Hey, this shit really aint that bad y'know." Dan Bejar did exactly that with this record. Now you're probably going, "I'm not going to spend the time hating something just to end up loving it." Too bad. The first listen to this will either have you complacent or bored. The satisfaction comes to you after say the 3rd listen.

029 Clams Casino - Instrumentals

This kid has changed the dynamic of beat making.

028 Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues

Word is, Robin Pecknold and his girlfriend broke up during the making of this album stating that the stress creating it was putting to much stress on their relationship and ended it with him. With that on his mind he continued on with the band. They busted their asses for months. Spent money they didn't have and came up with this. And after all of that, Robin's ex heard the record and decided to work things out with him after hearing how beautiful it sounds. The power of music I tell ya.

This album is Loversphere: Noir the punk version. Seriously. Please listen.

Kendrick does an amazing job covering topics such as drug abuse, sexuality, race and insecurity over innovative song concepts and rhyme schemes. He's too young to come off as preachy. He comes off more as a distant relative or major acquaintance. I don't know why I slept so fucking hard on it though. Wait I know why. I was busy.

This album was a supreme departure from the string of EP's he released the year before. Good thing it was. We were able to tap into his genius with a front row seat. Its not fair to say that this is a Dubstep album because it isn't the predominant genre showcased throughout the album. James Blake toys with different styles and sounds. He either gets "nuff" with it or very minimalist creating sounds to make you split in two or feel heavily claustrophobic when playing. It may take a while for people to understand its mechanics but when you do. Shit.

001 The Weeknd - House Of Balloons

It all started back in April, Bluu hits me up and he's like, "Yo, have you heard of this guy, The Weeknd?" I didn't. I had been sent House Of Balloons but just didn't listen to it until one morning. I turned it on and was immediately turned off by it. I didn't even get to the title track yet. I didn't understand why Bluu put me towards shit but there had to be a reason. I was going through a lot of bullshit at the time so I didn't really care about the reason. A few weeks later, my homie Ziplock was getting ready to go on a trip and decided to check him before he left. Before we ripped through some loudpacks, he says to me, "Have you heard House Of Balloons?". I gave that nigga my signature "are you serious?" face and said no. He said, "Alright." And turned it on as background music as we lit up. He was talking to me while it plays and was keen on me not missing "The Morning" so we got back inside for that record. Man. When that came on, I felt it. I was actually feeling what these niggas were raving about. I was able to identify. And when I did?? Pbbbttt. This release is the definitive Post-R&B album. Its opened doors you fuckers didn't even know existed. I know alot of you don't use drugs or party that hard, but you play this and for whatever reason you aren't uncomfortable hearing it. Yep alot of you have belted "La la la la la la la la. I'm so gone , i'm so gone. Bring out the glass tables..." more than once knowing damn well what the table is being used for. Abel's vocals, whether too high pitched or wiry at times, fit and make the subject matter (as grandiose and graphic as it is) has the ability to transform into a Sealy mattress making you feel comfortable. Through the comfort your able to take in the vibe. See a side of the city thats existed for years. This release is the most important one to come out of our city.....ever. It broke the rules of traditional r&b, ushering in a new voice, new sound and new subject matter.

Now most of u youngins, may nt recognize the name, even sum of u old heads may nt realize how important this lady was. She was a true force of motivation, hustle, drive and street smarts.

Sylvia Robinson is considered by many the mother of hip hop. Way back in the late 70s she heard sum kids rapping on the street n saw that as the future of music. She got her son to help introduce her to the kids, she then started diggin the crates, found a a beat, flipped it and produced it, and named the kids The Sugar Hill Gang, and that single was Rappers Delight. She released the track on her own record label Sugar Hill Records, and that track went to #4 on the charts. The 1st commercial hit single in Hip Hop was produced and released by a woman.
